You know, back in the days, I can only imagine Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean. Sure, that was hilarious when I was younger, but as I matured and grew up, so did my distaste for goofball slapstick comedy. It's not something I could explain. Something about portraying thick faced knuckleheads seems to irk me at some point for some unknown reason. So, my general attention to anything Rowan Atkinson died the moment I saw the second Bean Movie. Heck, I didn't even finish that movie since it just ended up making me feel I wasted portions of my life which I'll never be able to take back again. I recently saw the first Johnny English movie with The Duchess, and even though it did portray reminiscent humor from his roots, overall the movie was able to keep me watching throughout the length. It wasn't good, but it certainly wasn't bad. The Duchess wanted to watch the next iteration; I was more in it for the company.
Johnny English Reborn reprises the role of non other in a sequel dated five years after the incidents of the first movie. English is now a recluse training to redeem his honor for a bungled up job which had him lose his knighthood and his job at MI7. Of course, stuff happen and they need the supposed best man for the job, which prompted his return to the field. He then discovers his current assignment had links to the botched up operation he was involved in half a decade ago, and so he sets forth to bring light to the irregularities of his past.
The plot is simple yet apt for the light nature of the film. Some of the scenes may be predictable and cliche but that is expected twice as much, although I did prefer his older partner, who unfortunately didn't make a comeback. Since Johnny English has matured over the years, that means he's bound to be more knowledgeable and less likely to do acts of idiocy to which I highly approve. There are indeed a lot of amusing scenes worthy of noting, but don't go expecting to end up having cramps from laughing too much, but to be fair, I found myself more amused this time compared to its predecessor.
If you're up for some mindless wacky fun about espionage and generally stuff that is clearly Rowan Atkinson, then I wouldn't mind suggesting you this flick. It's not the best, but clearly, it really improves upon its past mistakes.
