Months ago, an otaku friend recommended that I give this anime a chance, and he said that it's really hella' funny that you probably can't stop laughing. He even provided me with his burned CD with all the episodes in it. So, yeah, why not give an episode a chance. or two. or three even. Actually, it didn't stop at three. It got so addicting that it kinda started to affect my progress in my school readings. Seto No Hanayome (My Bride is a Mermaid) is a romantic comedy about how the human, Nagasumi Michishio, ends up having to be forced to marry San Setouchi who is the only daughter of a mermaid gangster group, and the crazy maniacal overprotective gangster boss father will not allow that while sipping afternoon tea. Since the bride has to move in with the groom, the mermaid now has to cope up with life in the city and adventures with the Nagasumi's wacky friends in school.
The plot is fairly slow to progress with episodes generally depicting misadventures rather than actual development, but there are some points where the story suddenly takes on a major plot development, so you can't really say that this show isn't totally going anywhere. But regardless of the lack of a solid storyline, I find myself enjoying the company of the various colorful misadventures each episode brings out. The humor is very dynamic to say it in one word. I find myself laughing a good amount at the many slapstick, totally random, out-of-this-place, WTF moments with some sexual insinuations. I mean, seriously, this anime is so random and awkwardly crazy that it's actually very good and very very funny. The characters each have unique personalities that gives each one a chance to do gags and stunts that I honestly haven't seen elsewhere in all the animes I've seen. Given that, each one is uniquely hilarious in some way or another. The romance of the story isn't exactly serious, but it's cute enough to make me go awwwww *melts a bit* somewhere among the episodes. The pairing is cute and humorous enough, and gives a lot more situations in which many senselessly laughter filled scenes can be shoved in to.
Art wise, the drawings aren't exactly the prettiest around, heck, I found the square shaped eyes a downer when I first started watching, and I was immediately filled with mean judging thoughts. Obviously, since I finished watching the whole 26 episodes, average art isn't able to deter my interests from sticking on to this one. For what they lack in pretty art, they make up in for a whole assortment of effects and catchy colorful scenes and crazy conversations and lines. In fact, I actually don't have any complaints at all, so far, for this anime. Wow. Yeah, just wow. The manga ain't done yet actually, so, I really really really wouldn't mind at all if they bothered to make a season 2 of this thing. In fact, please do. Pretty please?
Do yourself a favor, and watch this when you get the chance. Of course, this might not really apply to all, but I really did enjoy my time watching the whole thing. If you can appreciate slapstick humor with bits of semi-serious romance with the rest of the time just in a perpetual state of not being the main focus, then yes, please do watch this. Chances are, you certainly, won't regret watching this one.
