Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Movie Review.

The Gang is all here! Actually, minus the other two from the past adventures. But hey, our favorite eccentric swashbuckling pirate is here in a new adventure for immortality! Of course, you'd already know that if you were paying particular attention to At World's End's ending. Now, that's Disney for you, capitalizing on a profitable series whose trilogy has left the stage with thundering applause. If I think about it, somehow I still managed to sneak watching this thing even in the midst of the great torturous third year of med school, which is quite a feat already considering how burnt out I am post-examinations. So, free times are really hard to come by nowadays. But hey, Duchess wanted quality time, so I was there to sneak some of it in.

The story continues a bit ahead of where we left off the third movie. Jack Sparrow, notorious as ever, is on the trail of locating the much fabled Fountain of Youth. Of course, along the way, various other new and old characters pop up to bring some substance into the adventure. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, Jack manages to travel with his former flame of sorts, Angelica, and historically infamous non-fiction pirate, Blackbeard, to look for said legendary waters. Barbossa is also back, just not the way I imagined him to be portraying.

As much I always found this franchise to be highly entertaining, the fourth film falls short on my expectations. Rather, I would say this film is left a bit unpolished, but it was certainly headed to the right direction. Too bad they empahsized too much on parts that didn't need any, and under emphasized on parts that needed it. It's just that It isn't really bad per se, but you can't help but compare this film to the previous films which were filled with much action, adventure, that great plot that reels you in somehow. Everything is tame an unexciting somehow. Don't get me wrong. If I saw this first before the other films, this would surely be one of those OH SNAP! films that's a cut above the rest. The way the plot progressed kind of made me realize that this isn't really in the context of a movie, but rather gave the vibe of sitcom that might have be called The Adventures of Jack Sparrow instead of Pirates of the Caribbean. Well, it certainly sucks when you got you've got huge shoes to fill and expectations to live up to.

The general feel of the show is a tad bit less authentic when compared to the old days. Maybe because Penelope Cruz as Angelica feels tacky in a way. Well, personally, I didn't feel the tackiness as much as many others out there, but a lot of my friends say that she made the whole experience less enjoyable because she didn't quite fit the role. Blackbeard's character also wasn't developed in the way people probably got attached to Davy Jones in the olden days, which left me in state of apathy when the event unfolded. Let's be honest, if it wasn't for Johnny Depp's magnetism for girls and his distinct humorous portrayals as Jack Sparrow, this movie would've been a dead meat the moment it got out of the front door.

If you're a fan to the series, or to Johnny Depp, then this movie will definitely interest you. Just don't expect too much from it and you'll save yourself some disappointment. Personally, I would avoid this kind of flick from the theaters, wait for the DVD release and save yourself  for something more worthy of your hard-earned 170php.
